The Federal Executive Council, FEC has approved the establishment of Disaster Relief Funds, designed to facilitate prompt assistance to disaster victims nationwide.
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, who made this known yesterday shortly after the FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa Abuja, said the fund aims to secure financial support from all three levels of government as well as private sector contributors for those affected by flood.
This is coming as FEC constituted a Technical Committee to reassess the dams across the country, especially the Alau Dam in Borno State where several lives were lost recently as a result of the flood disaster.
Consequently, the Federal Government, through the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency NIHSA, has proposed to build five buffer dams to contain constant floodings which often arise from the release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.
