The United States U.S  has imposed sanctions on the wife of a Brazilian judge who presided over the criminal case of right-wing former President Jair Bolsonaro.

The U.S. Treasury Department confirmed the sanctions on Viviane Barci de Moraes, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, under the Global Magnitsky Act, alongside sanctions on the Lex Institute, a financial entity controlled by Barci de Moraes.

Shortly after the announcement, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that additional Brazilian officials could be sanctioned if deemed necessary.

Meanwhile, the Brazil’s government have  condemned the U.S. action as an attack on its sovereignty, declaring that it will not bend to yet another act of aggression and illegality.
