Nigeria’s first Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, through her pet project, called Renewed Hope Initiative, RHI, has collaborated with the National Population Commission, NPC and United Nations Children Fund, UNICEF to launch an electronic birth registration for children.
This was revealed yesterday by the NPC Chairman, Nasir Kwarra, after a pre-launch meeting with the first lady in Abuja, stressing that the electronic birth registration which will officially kick off on August 29, marks the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s led administration to strengthen civil registration of birth of new born in the country.
The NPC boss expressed gratitude to the First Lady for agreeing to lead the initiative with them through the RHI, emphasizing that the event would mark a significant push for birth registration, providing children with their first foundational identity and recognition, and enable them to access government services, especially education and healthcare.
In his remarks, the UNICEF country Chief Child’s Protection, Ibrahim Sessay, while underscoring the need for the event, said the birth certificate which is issued by NPC and serves as proof of nationality, would equally help UNICEF to know the number of children to cater for.
