The Nigerian Government has hailed the historic ruling of the Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland, which sentenced a self-proclaimed pro-Biafra agitator, Simon Ekpa to six years imprisonment for terrorism-related offences.
Ekpa was arrested and remanded by Finnish authorities on 21st November 2024, following an investigation by the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation, NBI into allegations of inciting terrorism and promoting violence through social media, dated from August 2021 to November 2024, activity that was believed to have contributed to unrest in southeastern Nigeria.
A statement signed yesterday by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said for years, Ekpa’s reckless incitement and orchestration of violence had led to destruction of lives and businesses, in pursuit of a destructive and unlawful agenda that sought to undermine the peace, unity, and sovereignty of Nigeria.
The minister said the Finnish court’s decision confirmed Nigeria’s long-held stance, showing that the rule of law prevails and warned extremists worldwide that justice will eventually catch up with those who try to destabilize societies through terror.
Idris emphasized that President Bola Tinubu administration is firmly committed to safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty and upholding the dignity of all its citizens, and further urged all Nigerians, at home and abroad, to work together for national unity, peace, and security of the country.
