The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued an urgent warning to the public over the circulation of counterfeit Postinor-2 (Levonorgestrel 0.75mg) in Nigeria. According to the agency, these falsified emergency contraceptive pills pose serious health risks, including: failed contraception, unpredictable side effects, and possible long-term reproductive health complications.
NAFDAC explained that the counterfeit products can be identified through packaging errors such as the misspelling of “Verify” as “Veify” on the PIN sticker, and “Distnibuted in Nigeria” instead of “Distributed in Nigeria” on the back of the pack. The fake packs also display smaller and unclear fonts compared to the genuine product.
Two falsified batches have so far been confirmed: Batch T36184B with an expiry date of August 2028, and Batch 332 with an expiry date of February 2027. NAFDAC further clarified that these products were not imported by the authorized distributor, Society for Family Health (SFH), which confirms their counterfeit status.
The agency is actively removing these products from circulation and urges the public to remain vigilant. Please purchase Postinor-2 only from licensed pharmacies and report any suspicious products to NAFDAC through official channels.
