In a similar development, the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. CALLISTUS ONAGA has called on Christians to observe the Lenten period with faith, love, abstinence, prayers, as well as giving alms to the needy.
Bishop ONAGA, who gave this charge while delivering his Lenten homily, at the Bishop’s Court, reminded Christian faithful that Lenten season is a period of forgiveness and repentance with a view to seeking eternal redemption.
Speaking on the essence of the Lenten season, the revered Cleric noted that it is a period of prayers by the church to observe the passion, death and resurrection of JESUS CHRIST; adding that CHRIST fasted and prayed for 40 days and forty nights before commencing his earthly ministry.
Throwing more light on the issue of fasting Bishop ONAGA encouraged Christians to fast and abstain from those things that give them pleasure during the period of Lenten, and learn to be their brother’s keeper.
Also in the homily at the Holy Ghost Cathedral during a mid-day mass to commence the Ash Wednesday, Reverend Father VINCENT IWUCHUKWU, reiterated the fact that the Lenten season is a period of repentance, alms giving, and prayers; adding that the observance of these Christians virtues should not begin and end with the Lenten season.
Urban Radio Correspondent, EMEKA CHIBUOKE reports that this year’s season of Lenten, commenced yesterday, with the marking of Ash Wednesday, in the Universal Church.
