Authorities reported that over 800 people lost their lives and at least 2,800 persons were injured in one of Afghanistan’s deadliest earthquakes, with rescue efforts hampered by harsh weather and difficult mountainous terrain.
Administration spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid stated that the earthquake claimed 812 lives in the eastern provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar.
Also, the health ministry’s spokesperson in Kabul, Sharafat Zaman appealed for global assistance to address the destruction caused by the 6.0-magnitude earthquake which occurred on Sunday night.
Officials say the catastrophe would place additional strain on the Taliban-led administration, which is already struggling with challenges such as dwindling foreign aid and the mass deportation of hundreds of thousands of Afghans from neighboring countries.
