The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported a rise in Lassa fever deaths, with 75 fatalities across 18 states in seven weeks.

In its latest Lassa fever situation report, Director-General of NCDC, JIDE IDRIS, in a statement said as of epidemiological week 7, covering February 9 to 15, a total of 326 confirmed cases and 75 deaths were recorded across 16 states and 58 Local government areas, representing a case fatality rate of 23 percent, higher than the same period last year.

Taraba state recorded the highest number of deaths with 24 fatalities, Bauchi followed with 19 deaths, while Plateau recorded eight fatalities.

Ondo, Edo and Benue states each reported five deaths within the same period, Ebonyi accounted for three deaths, while Nasarawa and Kogi state recorded two deaths each.

The agency noted that most cases are concentrated in known endemic areas, attributing the ongoing spread and rising fatalities to weak implementation of response frameworks and gaps in surveillance and community engagement.
