The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO in collaboration with the European Union, EU has launched the second phase of its State Project on Education and Youth Empowerment in Enugu State, aimed at expanding, integrating, and strengthening systems to build teachers’ capacity and resilience from 2024 to 2028.
Delivering a welcome address, the Enugu State Commissioner for Education, Ndubueze Mbah, represented by Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Patrick Ochi, applauded UNESCO’s initiative, noting that its support would help equip teachers with the skills needed for world-class education in the state.
In his keynote address, Enugu State Governor,Peter Mbah who was represented by Special Adviser to the Governor on Education and Innovation, Chinyere Onyishi, commended UNESCO and the European Union for their dedication in advancing education, stressing that the project aligns with the state’s vision for experiential learning, and the establishment of smart schools.
The Head of the UNESCO Representative to Nigeria, Albert Mendy represented by Momi Joshi expressed gratitude to the Enugu State Government and its stakeholders for partnering with UNESCO and the European Union to enhance Nigeria’s education system.
Also, his colleague, MAGDALENA ANENE- MAIDOH, emphasized the critical importance of improving teacher quality through well-structured educational programmes to achieve long-term sustainability.
Urban Radio Correspondent, Judith Okara, reports that the highlights of the event included the inauguration of the State Project Steering Committee by Governor Mbah, which comprises the Chairman of the Education Committee, Enugu State Assembly, Osita Eze; the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Chris Ozongwu; and the Commissioner for Education, Ndubueze Mbah, among others.
