TUNJI-OJO VOWS TO INVESTIGATE ALLEGATIONS OF INHUMANE TREATMENT TO INMATES

The Minister of Interior, OLUBUNMI TUNJI-OJO, has vowed to investigate a disturbing video report on Facebook alleging that inmates at the Afokang Custodial Centre in Calabar are being subjected to inhumane treatment, including being served poorly cooked beans as breakfast.

In a statement by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, ALAO BABATUNDE, the minister said he considered the incident a serious breach of the standards of care and dignity to which inmates are entitled and subsequently directed a comprehensive and urgent investigation into the matter with a strong warning that those responsible would be held accountable,.

According to him, the Nigeria Correctional Service must ensure inmates are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve, assuring that the findings of the investigation will be made public, and necessary disciplinary actions will be taken.
