In a bold move to redefine its market presence and improve service delivery, 9mobile has officially rebranded to “T2” and entered into a strategic three-year national roaming agreement with MTN Nigeria, signalling a new era for the telecom provider.

Unveiled in August 2025 at a high-profile event themed “Tech Meets Tenacity”, the rebrand introduces “T2” as a modern, digital-first lifestyle brand aimed at reconnecting with Nigeria’s tech-savvy and youthful population. With a vibrant new orange brand identity, “T2” replaces the legacy green of 9mobile while retaining its core mission of innovation and trust.

According to “T2” C.E.O Obafemi Banigbe, the rebrand represents the “Transformation” phase in the company’s four-stage recovery roadmap: Stabilisation, Modernisation, Transformation, and Growth. This transformation signals a commitment to speed, smart living, and seamless digital connectivity.

Additionally, in July 2025, just weeks before the rebrand, “T2” signed a landmark national roaming agreement with MTN Nigeria, approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The deal allows “T2” subscribers to roam freely on MTN’s network infrastructure in areas where “T2” has limited coverage, without changing SIM cards or undergoing re-registration.

This agreement has already gone live in several key regions and is progressively expanding nationwide, significantly improving coverage and service quality for T2 customers.

Key Benefits of the MTN-T2 Roaming Deal:

For T2:

  • Nationwide service extension
  • Reduced network infrastructure costs
  • Opportunity to win back its subscriber base (which once peaked at 22 million)

For MTN:

  • Better utilization of “T2” underused spectrums: 900 MHz (5 MHz) & 1800 MHz (15 MHz)
  • New revenue through infrastructure leasing
  • Strengthening its position in National infrastructure sharing

For Consumers and the Industry:

  • Broader network reach
  • More reliable mobile experiences
  • A sustainable, collaborative model for telecom growth in Nigeria

The rebrand and partnership reflect a strategic shift for “T2” following its 2023 acquisition by Lighthouse Telecom Investments. With these bold moves, “T2” is positioning itself as a formidable player focused on digital innovation, customer-centric service, and industry collaboration.

In conclusion the transition from 9mobile to “T2” and the roaming partnership with MTN Nigeria mark a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s telecom landscape. As “T2” reintroduces itself with a revitalized brand and expanded reach, Nigerian consumers can expect smarter, faster, and more reliable connectivity in the months ahead.
