Real Madrid have sacked manager XABI ALONSO, less than 24 hours after their 3–2 defeat to Barcelona in the Supercopa final.

In an official statement, Real Madrid CF announced that the decision to bring ALONSO’s spell as first-team head coach to an end, was a mutual agreement between him and the club.

The club also expressed its appreciation for ALONSO, describing him as a Real Madrid legend who embodies the values of the institution and wished him well in his future endeavors.

ALONSO’S dismissal follows controversial post-match comments in which he described the Supercopa as “the least important” competition the club would contest this season.

The decision to part ways with the former midfielder comes just two days before Madrid’s next fixture, a Copa del Rey Round of 16 clash against Albacete, leaving the club with little time to appoint a replacement.
