President Bola Tinubu has directed the implementation of compulsory health insurance across Ministries, Extra-Ministerial Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in line with the National Health Insurance Act (NHIA), 2022.
In a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that the NHIA Act, 2022, stipulates compulsory health insurance for Nigerians and mandates the NHIA to ensure health coverage for all persons in the country.
The President’s directive focuses on five key areas, which require all MDAs to enroll their employees in the NHIA health insurance plan while allowing them to obtain supplementary private coverage if desired and mandating that all entities involved in public procurement to present a valid NHIA-issued Health Insurance Certificate as part of their eligibility documents.
Onanuga, explained that the certificate serves as proof of compliance with the compulsory health insurance law and is a prerequisite for procurement processes, adding that MDAs must also demand valid NHIA Health Insurance Certificates before issuing or renewing licenses, approvals and permits.
The directive also called for more constructive engagement with the private sector on the Act to ensure that businesses are not unduly constrained.
