President Bola Tinubu has approved the relocation of 29 correctional centres from urban areas across the country.
This was revealed yesterday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during the commissioning of 39 newly acquired vehicles and five bullet-resistant guard booths for the Nigerian Correctional Service in Abuja.
Tunji-Ojo said many of the existing correctional facilities, such as those in Suleja and Ikoyi, which were established in the 1950s are already outdated, underscoring the urgent need for modernisation to improve conditions for both correctional officers and inmates.
The minister said the relocation is part of a wider plan to address the infrastructural challenges hindering the effectiveness of the correctional system in the country.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Interior, has announced plans to cancel the visa-on-arrival policy, adding that the Federal Government would introduce landing and exit cards, which prospective visitors will pre-fill before coming into the country in place of the visa-on-arrival policy.
