Manchester United crashed out of the Carabao Cup in shocking fashion on Wednesday night, losing to League Two side Grimsby Town in a tense penalty shootout at Blundell Park.
United found themselves 2–0 down at half-time after goals from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren, with goalkeeper André Onana again criticised for costly mistakes. The Red Devils rallied after the break, as Bryan Mbeumo struck in the 75th minute before Harry Maguire’s late header forced a 2–2 draw.
The match was decided by a marathon shootout, ending 12–11 in Grimsby’s favour after Mbeumo—who had sparked United’s comeback—hit the crossbar with his second attempt. The result stands as one of the competition’s biggest upsets.
Manager Ruben Amorim apologised to fans afterwards, admitting the team looked “completely lost” and acknowledging Grimsby’s superiority on the night. The defeat adds mounting pressure on the Portuguese coach, as supporters continue to question his tactics and leadership.
This early exit is United’s worst Carabao Cup elimination in over a decade, while Grimsby progress to a historic third-round tie against Sheffield Wednesday.
