The Government of Enugu State says it is committed to enhancing the development of the mining sector in the state, improving the revenue from solid minerals, ensuring environmental safety, and regulating mining operations in the state.
Addressing newsmen yesterday, during the inaugural meeting of the Enugu State Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee MIREMCO, in Enugu, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Solid Minerals and Mining, SAMUEL OKORO disclosed the 4-Point Agenda for Sustainable Development in Enugu State Mineral Sector.
OKORO said the agenda with the approval of the Minister of Solid Minerals DevelopmentDELE ALAKE is anchored on productivity, revenue generation, environmental management, and safety.
OKORO also said that every miner would be required to accurately declare the volume and value of their mined resources, warning that where underpayment of royalties is discovered, the state would enforce severe consequences to deter such practices.
Lamenting that over 90% of the titles from all mineral classes were either inactive or dormant, leaving just 10% of the title holders currently in operations, he said the inactivity hinders the productivity and economic potential of the state.
Urban Radio Correspondent, IFEYINWA OGBUE reports that the title holders were strictly advised to be part of a meeting scheduled for 12th July 2024, saying it is aimed to ascertain the challenges they had been facing, resulting in their inability to go into full mining operations.
