The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed that all shanties in Abuja will be demolished to enhance the security of lives and properties in the nation’s capital.

Wike, who revealed this yesterday, while addressing occupants of a shanty village in the Wuye area of Abuja, expressed greater concern about the security risks posed by settlements in the FCT with no identifiable residents, affirming that no amount of blackmail, intimidation or threat from any civil society organisation or blackmail from any source will prevent the government from doing what is right.

The FCT minister, however, instructed occupants of the Wuye shanty village to appoint five representatives from among themselves to meet with the FCT Ministry tomorrow, November 12, to discuss ways of assisting them.

Speaking on behalf of the occupants, Abba Garu, appealed to the government to assist them in finding shelter, acknowledging that they had built temporary structures on the land, which was unoccupied, and had been living there for many years.
